Alastair Duncan (* 1942 in the United States of America ) is an American non-fiction author and art expert in the field of Art Nouveau and Art Deco , in particular Tiffany glass art .

Life

Alastair Duncans worked from 1977 to 1990 as an employee and consultant at Christie's auction house in New York City , where he temporarily held the position of vice president . Here he organized and cataloged numerous auctions. Through this activity he developed into a leading capacity in the decorative arts of Art Nouveau and Art Deco and an expert in Tiffany glass art . As a guest curator , he oversaw exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Today he is an independent consultant specializing in the decorative arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Duncan wrote numerous non-fiction books in the field. He lives in New York City.

In 2000, Duncan was sentenced to two years and three months in prison and $ 220,000 in compensation for exporting stolen art. At the center of the case was a rare three-meter tall Tiffany stained glass window that was stolen in 1992 or 1993 by Anthony Casamassina, a well-known grave robber, from the Salem Fields cemetery between Brooklyn and Queens . In 1998 Casamassina offered the window to the Bronx antique dealer Lawrence Zinzi , who then turned to Duncan. After Duncan checked the quality of the window, he and Zinzi bought it from the grave robber for $ 60,000. The two men then sold the property to a prospect in Japan for $ 219,980 and shared the profit.
