Goldene Gene is an Austrian documentary film by Wolfgang Konrad, Ursula Hansbauer and Clemens Stachel from 2016. The film deals with the global development of biobanks and gene stores in the context of the rise of molecular biology since the 1990s.

In interviews with researchers from various areas of the natural and social sciences , the film examines the history and present of plant seed banks, animal cell banks and biobanks that collect human tissue and thus human DNA .

The film opened in Austrian cinemas on October 7, 2016 and was released for online sale in March 2017. It has been shown at several film festivals, including NaturVision Ludwigsburg 2016, Kassel Dokfest 2016, Academia Film Olomouc 2017, Kraków Film Festival 2017 and Pariscience 2017, the international science film festival in Paris .

Prices

Goldene Gene received the 2nd prize of the German Biodiversity Film Prize 2016. In April 2017, Goldene Gene was awarded the Future Film Prize of the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde as part of the Brandenburg Festival of Environmental and Nature Films 2017 . In addition, Goldene Gene was nominated for the European Science Film Award 2016 by the European Academy of Science Film (EURASF) .
