René Spandauw

René Spandauw (born June 8, 1958 in Groningen ) is a Dutch basketball coach.

career

He played soccer until he was 13 years old before switching to basketball. During his playing career, the 1.95 meter tall Spandauw played in the second-highest league in the Netherlands, the clubs for which he was active included BV Groningen and Celeritas-Donar. He has been a licensed basketball coach since 1979.

From 1983 to 1989 Spandauw was the head coach of HSV Basketball in Haren , following stations were Computerij Meppel (1989/90) and BV Groningen (1990/91). In 1992 he was an assistant coach on the men's team at Texas A&M University in the United States , and between 1992 and 1994 Spandauw coached Celeritas-Donar in Groningen. In addition, he was the head coach of the Dutch U18 women's national team from 1993 to 2001 and as assistant coach of the Dutch women's senior team from 1991 to 1996.

In 1998 Spandauw interned with the WNBA team Charlotte Sting and worked as a talent scout for the club in 1999 and 2000. As part of this task, he mainly observed the European market. From 2000 to 2003 he worked in the same job for Miami Sol (also WNBA), i.e. partly at the same time as head coach of the German women's Bundesliga club USC Eisvögel from Freiburg , which he started in 2001 and held until 2003. In 2002 he led the kingfishers to the cup final.

In the 2003/04 season Spandauw was assistant coach at the University of Southern Mississippi in the USA, before he took up the post of head coach of TV 1872 Saarlouis in the women's Bundesliga in 2004 . In 2009 and 2010 he led the Saarland women to win the German championship and in 2008, 2009 and 2010 to win the cup. In addition, Saarlouis reached the German runner-up in 2008 and 2015, the cup final in 2005, 2006, 2014 and 2015 and the semi-finals of the EuroCup in the 2009/10 season . In the 2011/12 season Saarlouis was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga under Spandauw, but returned to the top German division in 2013 as champions of the 2nd Bundesliga South. In 2015, Spandauw's eleven-year term in Saarlouis ended. The Dutchman was named coach of the year in the women's basketball league in the 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons. In addition, he was named Trainer of the Year in Saarland in 2008 across all sports .

In addition to his main activity as a trainer in Saarlouis, Spandauw also worked for national teams again during this time: in 2005 and 2009 he was head coach of the German U16 women's team, in 2010 he was again assistant coach of the Dutch women's senior national team and in 2011 head coach of the Dutch team U18 women's national team. In 2012 he was in charge of the female U20 team in his home country and led the team to fourth place at the European Championships in Hungary, which was the best result of a Dutch U20 national team to date.

At the end of May 2015, Spandauw was introduced as the new head coach of the women's Bundesliga club SV Halle . In early December 2017, he was released in Halle after a series of eight defeats from eleven games. On August 1, 2018, he started work as head coach of the basketball part-time and full-time boarding school in Grünberg . In the summer of 2019 he also looked after the German U15 national team for girls.
