René Vierne

René Vierne (born March 11, 1878 in Lille , † May 29, 1918 near Verdun ) was a French composer and organist.

Live and act

René Vierne was the younger brother of the famous organist Louis Vierne and entered a Catholic priests' school in Versailles in 1889. However, he soon took organ lessons from his brother and in 1899 became a guest auditor with Alexandre Guilmant at the Paris Conservatory , where he won first prize in the organ class in 1906.

While still a student, he became organist at the Dominican church on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré , and in 1904 as the successor to the late Camille Andrès titular organist at the Notre-Dame-des-Champs church .

In 1914 Vierne was called up for military service. On May 29, 1918, he was killed in an Austrian grenade explosion near Verdun .

Vierne left behind polyphonic compositions for the organ and the harmonium as well as a Méthode d'harmonium .
