Renée Vivien
Renée Vivien (actually Pauline Mary Tarn ; born June 11, 1877 in London , † November 10, 1909 in Paris ) was a British poet and one of the last representatives of Symbolism .
Life
Renée Vivien was the daughter of a Scottish father and an American mother. After her school days, which she completed in New York , Paris and London, she settled in Paris as a (by inheritance wealthy) writer. Already during her school days she was noticed by her affection for her childhood friend Violet Shillito . Vivien was known for her eccentric clothing style and for her open commitment to her lesbian leanings. She had a stormy affair with Natalie Clifford Barney in 1900/01. She was very cultured and traveled a lot. Renée Vivien published many of her works under the pseudonym Paule Riversdale .
In 1908 Vivien attempted suicide while in London, but it failed. When she died in Paris the following year at the age of 32 on November 10, 1909, a suicide was also suspected. But since she was already severely ill with anorexia nervosa at that time and was weakened by drinking alcohol , that could also have been the cause of death. She found her final resting place in the Passy cemetery .
