In 1981 he was district champion in the youth division and in the years 1982 to 1984 he was a total of four GDR champions in the age groups 14 to 17. Because of these successes, he was delegated to TSC Berlin .

Already at the age of 17 Rene Ryl started in 1984 at the GDR championship of seniors and fought his way up to the final of the light heavyweight division, in which he had to accept a knockout defeat against the much older and more experienced René Suetovius . This defeat was followed in the same year in Tampere the junior European champion at middleweight. In the final of this championship he defeated Sergei Prokopenko from the Soviet Union on points (5-0 judges' votes).

Rene Ryl was also in 1985, 1986 and 1987 GDR runner-up in the light heavyweight division. In 1985 and 1986 he lost against Rene Suetovius just on points and in 1987 he had to admit defeat to Manfred Gebauer from Motor Mitte Magdeburg on points (2: 3).

But he was also able to defeat Rene Suetovius, one of his main competitors in the GDR. So he beat this in the finals of the TSC tournament in 1985 and 1986 in Berlin on points or by breaking off in the 3rd round. Rene Ryl also celebrated a remarkable victory at the Chemistry Cup in 1987 in Halle (Saale) when he defeated the Cuban champion Orlando Despaigne on points in the final battle (5-0).

In 1987 Rene Ryl lost in Rostock on the occasion of a comparison match between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany against Markus Bott on points. In the same year he was at the European Championships in Turin heavyweight Vice European champion . This was his last major competition.

Ryl developed multiple sclerosis. The first signs of this disease made themselves felt in 1988. Neither trainer, supervisor, nor Ryl himself suspected at this point that Germany's Olympic hopes were suffering from multiple sclerosis. On the contrary, the preparations for the Olympics were in full swing and being nominated meant fighting. Regardless of Ryl's state of health, a training camp was organized in Cuba in the 1988 Olympic year. Ryl about himself: "I never rebelled, went through everything and never complained. I wanted to become Olympic champion and I subordinated everything to this goal. But when I came back from Cuba, my eyelid drooped and I dragged my leg, it was clear to me: now It's over! I felt like Muhammad Ali fighting the system. "

In 1998 he did an apprenticeship as a PKA (pharmaceutical commercial employee) and worked in this profession for two years. Due to his special approach to sport, he found his calling late and began studying psychology in 2004. He is now close to graduation.

Since then, Rene Ryl has been fighting this disease with success and is now (2016) a boxing coach at TSC Berlin in the leisure area.
