Renewal is the first studio album by the German post-rock band Colaris . It was released in 2012 via Revolvermann Records.

Origin and background

The songs for the album were written in 2010 and 2011. For example, “The Cave” was played at the band's first concert and rearranged for the album. The recordings took place within five days in the SU2 studios in the Saarland city of Illingen . Produced, mixed and mastered was Renewal by Phil Hillen. Guitarist Jessie Schmidt described Renewal as a concept album about someone who feels pressured, is afraid of making mistakes and longs for change. In the first two songs, the person recognizes his position. During the songs “The Cave” and “Trail” the person grapples with the past and reconsiders his situation. Finally, with the two final titles, the person shows that he wants to change his situation.

The songs "Reveal" and "Aspire" represent the transitions between the three thematic blocks. The album cover was designed by Oliver Hummel. The clouds should represent the protagonist's flood of thoughts. The bright horizon should stand for positive thoughts, the dark clouds for negative thoughts.
