Innsbruck-Kranebitten race track

Innsbruck-Kranebitten race track was a temporary motorsport race track at Kranebitten airfield from 1958 to 1977 . The airfield is located in the west of Innsbruck , about 5 km from the city center.

history

A total of 18 international automobile races took place on the 1700 meter long and 14 meter wide circuit. In 1962 the racetrack was extended to 2,800 meters and was then also the venue for national motorcycle races. The competitions were held in various international touring and sports car classes and motorcycle classes, including the Formula Junior and Formula 2 racing car classes .

Well-known participants included Hans Herrmann , Niki Lauda and Dieter Quester , who also drove motorcycle races from 1963 to 1965. The well-known drivers Lorenzo Bandini , Renato Pirocchi and Gerhard Mitter participated in the Formula Junior series in Innsbruck .

Jochen Rindt's racing career began at the age of 18 on a Simca Monthlery on this track. At the 8th race for the title “Preis von Tirol” on October 10, 1965, Jochen Rindt won three class ratings with an Abarth 2000 GT , an Abarth Prototype GT and an Alfa Romeo GTA .

In 1977 the racing events at the airfield were stopped.
