Requiem (Jenkins)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Requiem is a classical composition by Karl Jenkins , first performed and recorded in 2005. It premiered on June 2, 2005 at Southwark Cathedral . Performers have been the West Kazakhstan Philharmonic Orchestra and Adiemus percussion and brass. The conductor was the composer himself. The soloists were Nicole Tibbels (soprano), Clive Bell ( shakuhachi ), Sam Landman (boy soprano) and Catrin Finch (harp).

The requiem has a total of 13 movements (in Japanese culture a divine number that is given special blessings) and is particularly characterized by the fact that some text elements of the usual Latin requiem text are replaced by Japanese haiku chants or combined with them. It also contains the movements Pie Jesu and In paradisum (as already inserted or emphasized by Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé in their Requiems) .
