Reshma Qureshi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reshma Qureshi is an Indian model , vlogger, and anti- acid attack activist . She is the face of the Indian campaign Make Love Not Scars . Her modeling career in the US began when she walked the catwalk for Archana Kochhar , an Indian fashion designer, at New York Fashion Week 2016.

Life and the attack

Qureshi is the youngest daughter of a taxi driver in east Mumbai , India. All 10 family members lived in a two-room apartment. She studied business administration in school.

On May 19, 2014, at the age of 17, Qureshi was attacked with sulfuric acid by her brother-in-law and two other assailants while she was driving to Allahabad for an exam . The attack was supposed to hit her sister Gulshan, but the perpetrators mistook the two. Qureshi lost an eye in the attack and left scars on his face and arms. Because of this experience and the disfigurement of her face, she was suicidal for a period after the attack and attempted suicide three times. After her physical wounds healed, she became the face of the NGO Make Love Not Scars. The aim of the organization is to give victims of acid attacks a voice and to end the sale of acid in India. Qureshi also started uploading beauty tutorials on YouTube to crack down on acid sales. Cosmopolitan called the videos "ridiculously empowering".

In an interview with India New England News in September 2017, Qureshi was asked if she had heard from her attacker after the attack. She replied, "I haven't spoken to the attacker and his family, but I met him in court two months ago. I wanted to rip his throat out right away, to be honest ... When he saw me he said to his lawyer and his folks, "She got so famous and a model, she's fine so please let me go or help me out." "

Model career

The New York Times reported that Qureshi's videos had over 900,000 views (as of September 2015).

At the 2016 New York Fashion Week , she opened the show for designer Archana Kochhar and wore a "breathtaking cream-white and floral floor-length evening dress". Chika Chan did Qureshi's makeup and Aubrey Loots her hair. Commenting on the experience, Qureshi said, "This walk on the catwalk was important to me because there are so many girls like me who have survived acid attacks and it will give them courage. And it will also give people the judgments of their looks , show that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover - you should look at everyone through the same eyes. "

She was also seen at the 2016 New York Fashion Week for Vaishali Couture in collaboration with Global Disability Inclusion and Fashion Week Online.

In September 2017, Qureshi worked for designer Jaheena at Crocs Mysore Fashion Week in Mysore , India.
