Resolution Island is an uninhabited island in northern Canada, southeast of Baffin Island . Administratively, it belongs to the Qikiqtaaluk region of Nunavut Territory .
geography
Resolution Island is located in the southwest area of Davis Strait at the entrance to Hudson Bay and around 30 km southeast of the southeast tip of Baffin Island . The island is 50 km long, up to 32.3 km wide and has an area of 1015 km², which makes it the fourth largest neighboring island of Baffin Island. North of Resolution Island - separated by the 3.8 km wide Graves Strait - is the 287 km² Edgell Island . The landscape of the hilly and up to 488 m high island is characterized by tundra interspersed with many small lakes and ponds .
history
The island was discovered for the western world on July 2nd, 1576 by Martin Frobisher and was later set on by him. The island was visited again in June 1631 by Thomas James . From 1954 to 1973, the United States operated a Distant Early Warning Line on Resolution Island during the Cold War . At the end of the 1980s, pollution, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), was discovered there; Since 1997, runs as part of the resolution Iceland Remediation Projects of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development , the decontamination of soils.
