Reto Emch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reto Emch (born July 2, 1961 in Solothurn ) is a Swiss visual artist. His work includes installation , sculpture , painting and photography .

Life

Reto Emch grew up in Derendingen. After attending the teachers' seminar in Solothurn, he learned photography and worked as a photographer for the Solothurn Canton Archeology. This was followed by a two-year stay in Paris from 1984 to 1986. Longer stays abroad are due to his assistant to Jean Tinguely from 1987 to 1990, whom he accompanies at international exhibitions. From 1987 Reto Emch (also known as EMCH) ran his studio in Turin , where he lived until 1993.

Since the late 1980s, Emch's works have been represented at national and international sculpture exhibitions, in Môtiers (1989), Spoleto (1992), Gubbio (1994) and Bex (2005).

After an intensive phase as a freelance artist, during which he showed installations in the park of the Kunstmuseum Solothurn in 1986 and 1992, he returned in 1998 as a technician to the museum in his hometown for seven years. Even during his employment, which he provided until 2005, he continued to work as an artist. After individual presentations at the Kunstverein Ludwigsburg (2003) and at the Giorgio Persano Gallery in Turin (2007), his first overview exhibition took place in 2008 at the Solothurn Art Museum . Large installations followed in Turin (2008 Fondazione Merz), Genoa (2008 Camera di Commercio), Demonte (2008), Hamburg (2009), Moscow (2015).

Reto Emch has been leading and curating the Haus der Kunst St. Josef in Solothurn since 2010. In the rooms of the former St. Josef monastery church, nationally and internationally known artists show mainly installation works.

plant

The focus of Reto Emch's work is installation works that are site-specific. He deals with the peculiarities and peculiarities of a place he has chosen and emphasizes or counteracts these with his interventions. He draws inspiration and borrowings from different areas. Aspects of Minimal Art and Arte Povera can be recognized. Sound, dance or theatrical moments can also be part of his work.

A recurring motif in his works is the preoccupation with water. In doing so, he deals with the flowing element in a complex manner. The wealth of variations in the color nuances that appear in the water can emerge in his painterly works, or acoustic features, such as drops of water falling on the floor, can be emphasized using sound. The spectrum of the realized works includes converted wells, newly built water basins in unusual locations or a former transport ship immersed in spray.

Another constant in his varied work is the use of everyday materials. These can be everyday objects that are no longer used, that are withdrawn from their original context and given a new function within a work. Disposed and reactivated refrigerators, washing machines or rubber tires are placed in new, surprising contexts in Reto Emch's works. His room installations appear several times in adapted form as a stage set. Among others in On_Line __ (2009), Buzzing Landscape (2011) and Kalaschnikowa (2016) for the dance company el Contrabando, with which he is also on tour internationally. The director and choreographer of the dance company is his partner Anet Fröhlicher.
