The Holzknecht space or retrocardiac space (abbreviation RCR, Latin : Spatium retrocardiale ) is a space between the posterior heart contour (which corresponds to the left atrium and ventricle) and the spine , on lateral chest x-rays . It was named after Guido Holzknecht (1872–1931), a pioneer in radiology and university professor in Vienna.

The Holzknecht room is narrowed in the case of heart diseases that are accompanied by an enlargement of the left heart cavity, such as heart valve defects . It can also be narrow in healthy people, e.g. B. with funnel breast .
