current condition

The Reventlou Beseler monument in Schleswig , erected in 1891, commemorates the failed Schleswig-Holstein uprising in 1848. The solution of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein from Denmark was not achieved until 1864 with Prussia's (and Austria's) victory in the German-Danish War .

prehistory

A committee headed by Rochus von Liliencron and Major v. Jeß used. The provincial parliament gave a grant of 9,000 marks to the donations that had been collected over the years . A total of 17,000 marks were available. No suitable design was found in the competition. Liliencron, who at the same time headed a committee for the erection of a monument for Carl Maria von Weber in Eutin , was able to persuade the creator of this work, the sculptor Paul Peterich , to create a new design of the Reventlou-Beseler monument for Schleswig . This was accepted. Peterich undertook to build the monument for 17,000 marks.

location

The area in front of the Heespen-Hof was made available by the tax authorities subject to revocation. The monument was a three-sided obelisk made of polished reddish granite. It rose in the middle of a green area in front of the Schleswig District Court , which was later built . It rested on a high base and a substructure. Left and right were the names of the governors for the survey years 1849–1851: Wilhelm Beseler and Friedrich von Reventlou . The front and back of the base bore the inscription:

THE STATHOLDERS OF SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEINS OF THE YEARS 1848-51 REVENTLOW BESELER THE GRATEFUL PEOPLE 1891

inauguration

On July 24, 1891, the commemoration day of the song festival of 1844, the monument was inaugurated with a pageant from the cannon monument (former location: Gottorfer Kreuz; melted down in World War II). Senior Pastor Schnittger unveiled the memorial and gave the speech. Baron von Liliencron handed the complex over to the city. Choir singing and the Schleswig-Holstein song concluded the celebration.

meaning

The monument erected in 1891 is unique in that the Prussian eagle and the coat of arms of Schleswig-Holstein are used almost equally for the first time on an official monument. The coat of arms was only used as the unofficial coat of arms of the province of Schleswig-Holstein .

Leftovers

The busts of the two governors, the figure of the soldier on the base and the Prussian eagle with the Schleswig-Holstein coat of arms were melted down during World War II. Only the obelisk with the inscriptions is preserved.
