The Rex Am Ring in Cologne is located at Hohenzollernring 60 and is one of the oldest German cinemas . It is operated by Rex Lichtspieltheater GmbH.

history

The cinema is the second oldest cinema in Cologne after the Odeon, which opened in 1919, and was opened on May 20, 1928 on Friesenplatz under the name Lichtspiele des Westens as the last major new building from the silent film era . It was the only cinema in Cologne to have a cinema organ that could be used to generate sounds such as the sound of the sea, the trampling of horses and ringing in addition to the films.

The first performance in the cinema was a film adaptation of an operetta . The first sound films were shown here in 1929 . After the Second World War , the cinema opened on August 1, 1951, Herbert Strate took over the cinema in 1953. On December 29, 1955, the premiere of the film I often think of Piroschka took place here. From 1974, Strate converted the Rex into a box cinema .

In August 2000, Catherine Laakmann, the operator of the Metropolis cinema on Cologne's Ebertplatz , bought the building, including the 833-seat cinema, had new seats installed, new carpets laid and the ventilation system renovated. With more than 1.77 million visitors, the Rex is the most successful one-dollar cinema in Germany today . In addition, since September 2008 the cinema has been showing sophisticated films with the focus on art house and German film under the motto "Lichtspiele" . After a three-year renovation break, the Rex am Ring was reopened on August 17, 2017.
