Rha Sun-hwa (born June 26, 1949 in Seoul ) is a South Korean historian , former museum curator and from December 27, 2013 to August 7, 2017, was the head of the Cultural Heritage Administration .

Life

After attending Attached Girls' High School , Rha enrolled at Sangmyung University and completed her history studies at Ewha Womans University ( Bachelor of Arts ). From 1976 on, she worked for 30 years at the Ewha Womans University Museum, most recently as chief curator, and from 1992 to 1999 she was the chief scientist of a Russian-Korean research group on the Kingdom of Balhae . From 2000 to 2005 Rha was President of the Korean Curators Forum and Board Member of the Korean Society of Museum Studies (2004–2011) and the Korean Institute of Culture Architecture (2006–2011).

In 2005 she became a member of the national cultural heritage committee and the cultural heritage committee of the city of Incheon and fulfilled this position until December 27, 2013, when President Park Geun-hye appointed her head of the cultural heritage administration office. She succeeded Byun Young-sup , who was forced to step down on November 18, 2013 after cracks in the beams and crumbling paint at the historic Namdaemun Gate in Seoul, just six months after the end the restoration, and the Court of Auditors started investigations into possible corruption and negligence. On August 7, 2017, she was replaced by Kim Jong-Jin during the Moon Jae-in reign .
