Rhabdopleura ( Gr . "Rhabdos" = rod, + "pleura" = rib, side) is a genus of marine invertebrates from the class of wing gills (Pterobranchia). It lives mainly in the cool seas of both hemispheres, also on the European Atlantic coast and in the English Channel .

features

Like all wing gills, the Rhabdopleura species are worm-like, only millimeter-sized animals that inhabit self-produced tubes made of scleroprotein in colonies . They can be divided into head shield ( proboscis or protosoma ), collar ( mesosoma ) and trunk ( metasoma ). The head shield has a ventrally (downwards) directed, glandular adhesive disc with which the animals can crawl. Dorsally (above) on the collar is a pair of lophophores (up to nine pairs in the case of Cephalodiscus ), which are populated with 15 to 30 ciliate tentacles arranged in two rows and which capture food particles ( filtration ). The sack-shaped trunk contains the U-shaped digestive tract and the simply built, unpaired gonads and ends in a long stem that connects each individual of a Rhabdopleura colony via a stolon (in contrast to the freely movable Cephalodiscus species). The mouth is on the collar directly behind the adhesive disc, the anus on the opposite side behind the lophophores. Gill slits are missing. Rhabdopleura species are only 1 to 2 mm long (without the stem).
