The Rheiderland newspaper is located in Risiusstrasse in Weener

The Rheiderland-Zeitung (RZ) is a traditional and independent small daily newspaper that has been published in Weener since 1860 . Its distribution area is the East Frisian Rheiderland . It is published by the small publisher H. Risius KG. In addition to the Ostfriesische Nachrichten in Aurich, the RZ is the last independent daily newspaper in East Frisia.

The newspaper appeared under the title Grenzlandzeitung "Rheiderland" into the 21st century . Until May 31, 2005 the Rheiderland-Zeitung was one of the last midday newspapers in Germany. Since June 1, 2005 it has been published as a morning newspaper. The sold circulation is 4790 copies, a decrease of 20.1 percent since 1998. Most subscribers and readers of the Rheiderland-Zeitung live in the Rheiderland, here it is also the most-read paper and competes with the Ostfriesen-Zeitung, which appears in all of East Frisia .

history

Even before they came to power in 1932, the National Socialists tried to infiltrate the newspaper and fill the editorial staff with party supporters. This was prevented by the old publisher Aeilt Risius, the well-known "newspapers only exist in freedom." On April 1, 1933, a long article appeared in the Rheiderland-Zeitung informing about the impending boycott of Jewish shops . In an advertisement with the Nazi emblem that was placed on the same day, it was stated that

  1. no longer buy a German in Jewish shops or from Jewish travelers,
  2. no German farmer should neither sell nor buy anything from a Jewish cattle or fur trader,
  3. if these orders are violated, they will be expelled from the ranks of the German national movement and the person concerned will then also be boycotted.

In the following years Risius was able to maintain the independence of his newspaper until it was closed by the Nazis in 1943. After the war, the newspaper could appear again from 1950.

Recent developments

The most recent drastic changes at the small newspaper are the result of conflicts in the East Frisian newspaper market. For a long time, almost all East Frisian newspapers were equipped with the supraregional cover pages of the Oldenburger Nordwest-Zeitung (NWZ), which made it a quasi-monopoly. In the course of restructuring and savings at the NWZ and at the Ostfriesen-Zeitung (OZ), which was dominated by the NWZ at the time , the small newspapers like the RZ initially received cover pages that were identical to those of the OZ.

However, in 2004 the OZ reduced its reporting in the Rheiderland to a minimum as part of these savings. The Oldenburger NWZ did not see any competitive situation there with "their" OZ, since the independent data center was both a customer for shell sites and a cooperation partner. In the past, however, the NWZ endeavored to take over the entire East Frisian newspaper landscape, which it had largely succeeded in doing.

Apparently, the NWZ also made efforts at the RZ to take over the majority of the independent newspaper in Weener or to force it into the Ostfriesland newspaper group dominated by it ( Ostfriesen-Zeitung , General-Anzeiger , various advertising papers ). The RZ responded with the surprising step to terminate the contracts with the NWZ as the supplier of the cover pages and as a cooperation partner at the earliest possible date and to switch to the second major newspaper in the region, the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ).

The reaction of the NWZ and OZ to this sudden and unexpected competitive situation in the Rheiderland was to resume reporting from the Rheiderland more intensively and even to set up a small OZ external editorial office in Weener in spring 2005, although an external editorial office was saved elsewhere the year before.

The Rheiderland-Zeitung , which until then had traditionally appeared as a midday newspaper, then pushed ahead with its change of cover pages and carried out this in March 2005. The newspaper has since appeared in the larger Rhenish format and consistently in four colors. In June 2005 the newspaper also became a morning paper and thus established "equality of arms" with regard to the topicality of the news. The RZ was the last lunchtime newspaper in Lower Saxony.
