The Rhine Quality Station Worms is a measuring station that is used to monitor the water quality of the Rhine .

Geographical location

The Rheingütestation Worms is located on the left bank of the Rhine, at river kilometer 443.3. It is located in and at the foot of the Nibelung Tower, the western bridge tower of the Nibelungen Bridge in the urban area of Worms and thus in Rhineland-Palatinate . The station also uses the three lower floors of the tower - located below the carriageway level - with around 300 m². In addition, there is 270 m² in the neighboring new building, where laboratories , offices and an information room are housed.

With regard to the Rhine, the station is “below the main stress point Neckar / Mannheim / Ludwigshafen” and thus also BASF . The station is part of a surveillance chain that was set up along the Rhine and its tributaries and extends from Lake Constance to the North Sea .

history

The Rhine was extremely polluted until the mid-1970s. Since then, the water quality has improved significantly. In order to ensure what has been achieved and to further improve quality, the river's water must be constantly monitored. After the major chemical accident near Basel in 1986 , the federal states of Baden-Württemberg , Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate agreed to jointly build a water monitoring station in Worms in 1990. It closed a gap in the surveillance network. The location at the Nibelungen Bridge was chosen because the bridge structure made it relatively easy to install the water extraction points. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1993, trial operation began in 1994 and the station officially went into operation on May 17, 1995. From 1998 to 2011 it was also the "Rhine Quality Control", in which the water quality data from the entire German catchment area of the Rhine were evaluated. This task was given up with the establishment of the Rhine River Basin Community (FGG Rhein) at the end of 2011 and transferred to the FGG Rhein office.

Sponsorship

The states of Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate have set up the Rhine quality station in Worms and operate it together. It is assigned to the State Office for the Environment Rhineland-Palatinate and an advisory board made up of representatives from all three federal states accompanies its work.

Information board at the Rheingütestation

The Rheingütestation Worms is a measuring station within a whole chain of comparable measuring stations along the Rhine. Your main tasks are:

  • Main measuring point of the international Rhine measuring program chemistry ,
  • the overview monitoring: measurement and evaluation of the Rhine water quality in close proximity to the main pollution points and
  • since January 1, 2012 the task of the office of the FGG Rhein.

The most important parameters of the continuous measurements can be called up online and read off on an information board on site. The station publishes activity reports. The Rheingütestation is also an “extracurricular learning location”. She takes part in an educational project that the Rhineland-Palatinate water management authority developed together with the Heidelberg University of Education. Here, schoolchildren of different age groups can learn about the topic of "water" and experiment independently. The Rheingütestation also regularly receives groups of visitors and takes part in a series of events several times a year.

function

Samples are taken at four points: near the two river banks and in the area of the two river pillars of the Nibelungen Bridge. 2 liters / second are withdrawn at all four points. The measuring water pipes are more than 1200 m long and lead the water into the laboratory on the Worms river bank. There are three laboratory rooms. The following are constantly checked here:
