The Rheinpark Duisburg is a residential and leisure area in Duisburg-Hochfeld , which is being built on an area that has become vacant and has been used by heavy industry since the middle of the 19th century. It is located on the right bank of the Rhine between river kilometers 774 and 775, north of the cultural port .

The development of the area, which extends from the cultural harbor to the bridge of solidarity , is planned in several construction phases. Sub-areas have been gradually completed since autumn 2008. Originally, the area was planned as part of the 2011 Federal Garden Show in Duisburg, which had to be canceled for cost reasons.

The 25 hectare park area, modeled as a meadow landscape and newly planted with 3000 trees, is accessible. Two bridges and two underpasses cross the freight railway line that runs parallel to the banks of the Rhine and thus connect the park with its 1.4 km long promenade. The open and recreational areas include sandy beaches on the promenade with wooden plateaus as sunbathing areas and play facilities such as a skate park and street ball field . Parts of the former industrial facilities have remained as wall fragments and are decorated with graffiti . The footpath and cycle path of the Duisburg-Hochfelder railway bridge crossing the Rhine is directly connected to the site . There is also a small restaurant with an outdoor area on the park area.

Opposite the Rheinpark, on the left bank of the Rhine , lies an extensive floodplain landscape belonging to Duisburg-Rheinhausen with the Rheinuferpark that was laid out in the 1950s.

Residential area

As part of the Rheinpark, the construction of a new district called Rheinort in the area of ​​a wire rod mill that has yet to be relocated is planned in a second construction phase .

IGA

The Rheinpark is to be one of the main locations of the International Horticultural Exhibition 2027 .
