The Rheinstraßenbrücke Darmstadt is a road bridge that spans the Main-Neckar Railway and crosses the B 26 and a tram route . The bridgeheads and pillars are listed . The structure is part of the Route of Industrial Culture Rhein-Main Darmstadt .

location

The bridge is located near Darmstadt Central Station and spans its apron, including the Frankfurt-Heidelberg railway line. The main road, which in this area is called Rheinstraße , runs over the bridge with a total of four lanes, with sidewalks and cycle paths on both sides . The tram uses one lane each and connects the city of Griesheim via lines 4 and 9 with downtown Darmstadt.

history

The bridge was built from 1910 to 1912 with three openings by the Prussian-Hessian railway administration, including the rails for the steam tram at the time. The embankment walls were clad with red sandstone blocks. The decorative bridgeheads, designed as neo-baroque volutes with spheres, and the parapets are made of basalt. With the electrification of the main train station in the mid-1950s, the structure for the overhead line construction was raised.

Traffic volume

The bridge is used daily by 50,000 vehicles and for 250 tram trips. In addition, around 250 trains pass under the bridge every day.

New building

From 2012 the condition of the bridge deteriorated, which is why planning for a new replacement building began in 2013. In 2014, the City of Darmstadt's magistrate decided on preliminary planning. A realization competition took place in 2016. The draft planning was completed in the following year.

From 2021 onwards, the old structure is to be replaced by a new building for around 30 million euros. The width is to be increased from 26.50 m to 43.55 m in order to create the necessary space for a third lane out of town and to separate the lanes for car traffic, trams, cyclists and pedestrians more strongly. The bridge for the railway line will also be raised to a clearance height of 5.70 m so that the overhead contact line will be decoupled from the bridge.

In advance, two parallel, also dilapidated bridges were renewed in order to be able to use them for diversion routes during the new construction of the Rheinstrasse bridge.
