Rheita is an impact crater to the south of the lunar front , west of Furnerius crater and northeast of Metius . Southwest of Rheita, the 200 km long moon valley Vallis Rheita, named after the crater, runs in a north-westerly or south-easterly direction. The crater is moderately eroded, the interior is flat and has a central mountain .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German priest and astronomer Anton Maria Schyrleus de Rheita .
