Rhizotrogus marginipes is a beetle from the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae). A unique trivial name is not in use for the species. It is seldom referred to as a June beetle , a name that is generallyassigned to Amphimallon solstitiale and is also occasionally found for other representatives of both genera or even for the garden beetle ( Phyllopertha horticola ).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 14 to 18 millimeters and are variable in color. The pronotum is usually dark with reddish spots. The disc of the pronotum is dense and coarse point-like structured and protruding hairy, between the coarse points there are also finer points. The rest of the body is pale reddish yellow, the wing cover seam and occasionally the edge of the wing tips is narrowly darker in color. There are also individuals with black markings or very dark specimens.

Differentiation from Amphimallon solstitiale :

While Rhizotrogus marginipes has barely visible stripes on the elytra and adjacent hairs, Amphimallon solstitiale has long, rows of eyelash bristles on the sides of the elytra. Often the pronotum is darker and divided by a center line. Particularly noticeable is the long protruding hairs on the elytra , which are longer on the side edges.

Life cycle

The female lays around 30 eggs in the ground. From this, larvae develop, which are also called grubs . In this first stage of development, they mostly feed on plant remains and smaller roots. After the larvae have overwintered twice, they pupate and hatch in early or late June, depending on the weather conditions. As adults , they eat the tissue of leaves and begin to reproduce. In cold early summer, the June bugs swarm for one to two hours on July evenings around sunset.
