Rhodes Browne
Rhodes Browne (born September 15, 1865 in Columbus , Georgia , † October 8, 1936 there ) was an American businessman and politician .
Life
Rhodes Browne was the younger of the two sons of the entrepreneur John Rhodes Browne (1819-1900) and his wife Roberta Hanson Harrison Browne (1841-1932, nee Yonge). He graduated from the University of Georgia but left at the age of 19 and started working for the Georgia Home Insurance Company . Working there in various departments, he eventually became vice president of the company. After his father's death, he took over as President of the Georgia Home Insurance Company . He later became chairman of the company's board of directors . During his subsequent corporate career, Browne served as President of the First National Bank of Columbus , the Home Savings Bank of Columbus , and the Muscogee Bank and Trust Company . He also ran the Provident Loan and Investment Company , Bull Creek Sand and Gravel Company , chaired the Board of County Commissioners of Muscogee County, and served as director of Swift Manufacturing Company .
From 1908 to 1911 he was mayor of Columbus , Georgia . He had previously served on the city's Board of the Water Commissioners . He later became chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Roads and Revenue of Muscogee County , and as such was responsible for the expansion and maintenance of the local road network.
Browne married Nina Young (1869-1946) from Lexington , Kentucky in 1890 . The marriage resulted in two children, a son and a daughter. However, his son died in infancy. Browne was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church .
