features

The carp fish that remain small , only one species reaches a standard length of more than ten centimeters, have a small, slightly underneath and slightly sloping mouth without barbels. The high-backed and laterally flattened body cover large and elliptical scales . The approach of the dorsal fin is slightly behind that of the pelvic fins . The anal fin begins at the level of the last third of the dorsal fin. The last undivided hard ray of the dorsal and anal fin is strong, sometimes spiky. The sideline is incomplete and only the first scales are pierced by sideline canals. The strong pharyngeal teeth are, as with all bitterlings, arranged in a row with five teeth each on the gill arch. The gill trap is made up of six to 17 short brachio spines .
