Rhopilema verrilli is a jellyfish belonging to the order of the root-mouth jellyfish .

features

The umbrella of the Rhopilema verrilli , with a diameter of 35 to 50 cm in some cases, is either clear, transparent or cream-white in color. The side has a reddish-brown pigmentation . There are 48 lobules on the edge of the umbrella. This jellyfish has no tentacles , but there are finger-shaped, dark-spotted arms in the center of the underside of the umbrella, which have ruffled feathers for filtering food. The mildly poisonous nettle capsules can hardly or not at all irritate the skin on contact.

Rhopilema verrilli could be confused with Stomolophus meleagris , but with the latter the more rounded and somewhat rougher umbrella tends to brownish at the edge and the finger-shaped arms are also missing. The nettle capsules of the Stomolophus meleagris are somewhat more poisonous.

Multiplication

The animals are of separate sex. In the polyp stage, however, reproduction can occur through asexual budding (rarely) and through the formation of podocysts .

nutrition

Rhopilema verrilli feeds on tiny pieces of plankton , which are pressed out of the umbrella with the water and caught by the pinnate ligaments.
