description

Rhyacotriton species are relatively small salamanders with bodies less than 10 cm in length, relatively short tails, and small heads with showy large eyes. Their coloring is brown on the upper side, sometimes marbled gray, on the ventral side yellow-orange, sometimes dotted with black. The trunk is laterally segmented by 14 to 15 clearly visible rib furrows. Rhyacotriton species have a ring-shaped, otoglossal cartilage. There is no second epibranchial . The lungs are for the most part reduced. The 4 or 5 toes are not webbed . The columella , an ossicle, is wide and spread out like a plate and does not grow together with the walls of the ear capsule . The larvae have no folds in their dorsal fin.
