Rice and Shine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rice and Shine is a German monthly podcast. It is moderated by the German journalists Minh Thu Tran and Vanessa Vu . The podcast is about the realities of life in Vietnam .

history

The two journalists Tran and Vu met the German School of Journalism in Munich. There they noticed that there was a "need for speech" and that they did not feel represented enough in the German media as people of Asian descent. In February 2018 they published their first episode, which was about the Vietnamese New Year festival Tết Nguyên Đán . In August 2018 they hosted the former FDP politician and German Vice Chancellor Philipp Rösler, who was also of Vietnamese origin .

Since they were founded, they have also brought their project to various live stages at events such as the PULS Open Air Festival , the Kosmonaut Festival or the Re: publica . In March, they criticized BR television's coverage of the Dietfurt "Chinese Carnival", where they accused the broadcaster of having produced a tutorial on yellowfacing . At the beginning of 2020, they campaigned against the growing anti-Asian racism in Germany due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

reception

The podcast is largely praised benevolently and as innovative. Alicia Lindhoff from Frankfurter Rundschau describes the podcast as "great" and praises the particularly 21st episode "Boat People", a radio play feature that tells the story of Vietnamese refugees who fled to the diaspora via boats after the end of the Vietnam War , of which 11,000 ended up in Germany. She writes to the moderators about her "to master journalistic tools very well" and especially worth hearing due to the mixture of personal dialogues and the "exciting reportage elements". Inna Hartwich from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung attested to the podcast that compared to other "minority podcasts [...] it seemed best informed". The fashion magazine Vogue described the 6th episode on "Poverty and Ascent" as "particularly recommendable. The podcast was also mentioned as a listening recommendation in various media, including the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Vice .

Awards

In 2019 the podcast was nominated for the Grimme Online Award . Both journalists were honored independently by Medium Magazin as one of the 30 best journalists up to 30 for 2018 (Vu) and 2019 (Tran).
