Richard-Lenoir is an underground station on line 5 of the Paris Métro .

location

The station is located in the Saint-Ambroise district of the 11th arrondissement of Paris . It lies lengthways below the western lane of the Boulevard Richard-Lenoir , parallel to the Canal Saint-Martin , which runs under its broad median , between the Rue Pelée and the Rue Gaby-Sylvia.

Surname

The boulevard Richard-Lenoir gives it its name. François Richard-Lenoir (1785–1839) was one of the two founders of the first Parisian cotton mill.

history

The station went into operation on December 17, 1906 with the opening of the northern extension of line 5 from Place Mazas (since 1916: Quai de la Rapée ) to Lancry station (since 1946 Jacques Bonsergent ). It was built in an open excavation.

description

In contrast to the elliptical cross-section, which is more common in Paris, the station has a horizontal metal ceiling. Longitudinal girders, which carry small vaults made of bricks, rest on iron support beams that are perpendicular to the direction of travel.

The station has two side platforms on two main tracks. The two entrances are on the edge of the central strip of Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, the northern one still has the Art Nouveau decor designed by Hector Guimard .
