Memorial to Richard Wagner (2009)

The Richard Wagner Memorial is a monumental seated memorial created by the sculptor Heinrich Waderé for the composer Richard Wagner . It stands in a green area on Prinzregentenplatz in Munich 's Bogenhausen district between the Prinzregententheater and the Prinzregentenstadion . After a selection from various designs, the one who shows Richard Wagner in a pose similar to that of Goethe in his portrait of Goethe in the Campagna came into play .

construction

The rough block of the monument was made of Untersberg marble , had a volume of 14 cubic meters and weighed 600 quintals . The transport turned out to be difficult. At Untersberg it took over thirty horses to get the block to the train station. The marble was processed in a provisional studio at the Ostbahnhof . After completion, the monument still weighed 450 quintals. Two days and a special Maffei road locomotive were necessary to get the figure to its location.

inauguration

The memorial was unveiled on May 21, 1913, the day before the composer's 100th birthday. The unveiling took place in the presence of the initiator Ernst von Possart and the Prince Regent Ludwig . The inauguration of the monument, felt by many Munich residents as a reparation to Richard Wagner (he had to flee the city in 1865), took place with lively public participation. Wagner's wife Cosima and his son Siegfried refused to participate in the event for personal and probably also economic reasons (competition between the “Munich Festival” in Bayreuth ).
