Richard James Ashworth (born September 17, 1947 in Folkestone ) is a British politician who was a Member of the European Parliament for Southeast England from 2004 to 2019 . Originally elected for the Conservative Party , he joined Change UK - The Independent Group in 2019 .

Life

Richard Ashworth attended The King's School in Canterbury from 1960 to 1965 and then studied agriculture and management at Seale-Hayne College in Devon until 1968 . He then went to New Zealand for 2 years before becoming a dairy farmer in East Sussex for over 30 years . He is married and has three daughters.

In 1997 he ran for the English parliamentary elections for the North Devon district and in 1999 for the European elections for the South East region. Ashworth has been a member of the European Parliament since June 2004. He belongs to the European People's Party . He was also Chairman of United Milk Plc (1996-2002) and NFU Corporate (2001-2003).

Ashworth was a member of the Budget Committee and the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand .

In October 2017, Ashworth was expelled from the Conservative Party together with MEP Julie Girling because of disputes with the party leadership over his voting behavior on a resolution affecting Brexit . On February 28, 2018, he joined the Group of the European People's Party with Girling .

On April 16, 2019, Richard Ashworth announced that he had joined Change UK - The Independent Group. He ran for Change UK as the top candidate in the constituency of South East England for the 2019 European elections , but missed re-entry into parliament.
