Richard Finke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Finke (born August 27, 1908 in Schlichtingsheim near Glogau , † April 28, 2007 in Oberviechtach ) was a German painter, hunter and behavioral scientist.

Finke studied in Berlin and then worked as a high school teacher, initially in Bad Karlshafen . His drawings and oil paintings appeared in publications such as the Ostdeutsche Monatshefte , dem Schlesier , dem Türmer .

By his own admission, Finke was a hunter himself for 54 years. He succeeded in gaining the trust of a wild boar rot which he accompanied from 1959 to 1966; Heinz Sielmann called this a "sensation". Finke then became an opponent of hunting. He published his research results in specialist magazines and later described his experiences in an autobiographical text. Finke's pictures of hunting motifs were published by the Deutsche Jägerzeitung , Wild und Hund und Stalk , among others . Because of his research on wild boars, Konrad Lorenz nicknamed him Keiler hc

Similarly, in the 1970s, Heinz Meynhardt managed to accompany a pack over several years and to research their behavior. As early as 1967, Heinz Gundlach submitted his dissertation in Göttingen on the behavior of wild boars, which was also based on field observations. As a behavioral researcher, however, in contrast to Finke, he avoided feeding the animals and coming into close contact, even if his observations in game enclosures exploited an habituation to humans.

Finke lived in Oberviechtach from 1974 until his death.
