Heinz Meynhardt

Heinz Meynhardt (born April 21, 1935 in Burg ; † October 27, 1989 ibid) was a German behavioral scientist , animal filmmaker and non-fiction author . As an internationally recognized expert on wild boar , he was a well-known author of books, films and television. He has published numerous books and 32 films on the life of wild boars.

Life

After attending school in Burg, Meynhardt completed vocational training as an electrician . In 1954 he passed the master electrician examination and started his own business . At the beginning of his career as a craftsman, Meynhardt occupied himself with animals in his spare time, he owned a budgie breeding and was a breeding judge for these birds. Through a friend who was a hunting director, Meynhardt came into contact with wild boars in 1973, to which he then devoted his full attention.

Originally, he only wanted to keep the wild boars away from the potato fields by " diversion feeding ". He fed the pigs corn, and the animals were soon waiting for him. Through feeding, he was able to establish social contact with the wild boar herds and finally get closer to the wild animals and also move with them. From 1976 Heinz Meynhardt had won the trust of the Rotte. He captured the impressions he gained with the camera. As the first researcher in Europe, he managed to establish such close contact with the sows that the herd tolerated him when the newborns were littered. He documented the life of the until then little researched wild boar not only on film from birth to death.

His work was also integrated into the network of the GDR wildlife research areas and a lively research exchange developed. Since 1975 Meynhardt received research assignments from the Institute for Forestry in Eberswalde and from 1980 also from the Research Center for Animal Production of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR based in Dummerstorf . His first book, Wild Boar Report. Four years among wild boars , published in 1978. After many years as a wildlife researcher and active nature conservationist , Meynhardt received his doctorate in agricultural sciences (Dr. agriculturae) from the Karl Marx University in Leipzig in July 1987 . His dissertation is entitled Behavioral studies on European wild boars and feral domestic pigs and conclusions for practical pig production .

The notion that is widespread in German-speaking countries, especially in the hunting press and among some hunters, that the oldest, reproductive female in the pack, the so-called Leitbache, prevents lower-ranking, young brooks in the pack from reproducing and acts as a "brake on growth" of the population would work, goes back to a hypothesis by Meynhardt. According to the current research, both are wrong - while the mating season can be synchronized within individual packs, the suppression of reproduction is neither empirically proven nor plausible in view of the wild boar described as r-strategist . In contrast, various studies suggest that a good physical condition of the respective animal due to the nutritional situation is decisive for early sexual maturity and participation in reproduction.

Meynhardt had been a member of the LDPD since 1977 . In October 1989 Meynhardt died of a brain tumor .
