Richard Huntington Melton

Richard Huntington Melton (born August 8, 1935 in Rockville , Hanover County , Virginia ) is a former ambassador to the United States .

Life

From 1963 to 1965 Melton was accredited at the US Embassy in Managua and was a member of the US missions in Great Britain , the Dominican Republic , Brazil and Uruguay .

During the Carnation Revolution in Portugal from 1974 to 1977, Melton was political advisor to US Ambassador Frank Carlucci . Melton interviewed younger members of the Armed Forces Movement . Carlucci advised against supporting the Azores Liberation Front and supporting the right-wing extremists.

The post of ambassador to Managua had been vacant for six months when the US government appointed Melton. On July 11, 1988, he was withdrawn from Managua at the request of the government of Nicaragua .
