Life

Richard Jatzek came from a working-class family from Sandhofen near Mannheim. As a young man he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and took part in the fight against the fascist movement.

After the KPD was crushed or went underground with the transfer of power to the NSDAP , Richard tried after the first wave of arrests in 1934 together with his wife Mathilde, as well as with his comrades Daniel Seitzinger, Friedrich Schwier and Leo Strobanski in Sandhofen a new local branch of the party build up. He also had contact with conscripted comrades in his party in the labor camp . There leaflets and leaflets were produced. Correspondence and instructions were passed on at a distribution station. This group was crushed by the Gestapo in 1935.

Richard later joined the Lechleiter group again as a distributor. This group was also uncovered and its members were sentenced to death and executed before the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court .

Jatzek's remains were transferred to the Anatomical Institute of Heidelberg University with those of other resistance fighters "for research purposes" . On July 22, 1950, a community grave was laid out in the Heidelberg Bergfriedhof , where Jatzek and 26 other victims of the Nazi regime were buried. A memorial plaque was attached to the wall. On November 1, 2001, a stele by the artist Günter Braun from Eppelheim installed on the communal grave and a name plaque with the names of the German victims of National Socialism were presented to the public.
