Ryszard Kole

Ryszard "Richard" Kole (* approx. 1946) is a Polish pharmacologist and professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .

Kole is known for his work on alternative splicing and the modulation of RNA splicing and gene expression using antisense oligonucleotides . The development of Eteplirsen for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy is attributed to Kole.

Live and act

Riszard Kole graduated from the University of Warsaw with a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master’s degree in chemistry in 1969 . In 1976, he received a Ph.D. from the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. in science. As a postdoc between 1977 and 1983 he worked with the later Nobel Prize winner Sidney Altman and with Sherman Weissman , both at Yale University .

In 1983 he received his first professorship (assistant professor) for pharmacology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , in 1988 he became an associate professor , and in 1996 he was given a full professorship, which he held until 2008.

Kole founded the biotechnology company Ercole Biotech and from 2008 worked as Senior Vice President for the pharmaceutical company AVI BioPharma (now Sarepta Therapeutics ).

In 2019, Kole received the Massry Prize together with Stanley T. Crooke . His award lecture was titled Mysteries of RNA Splicing and the Path to Treatment of Rare Inborn Disorders. According to the Scopus database, Kole has (as of January 2020) an h-index of 40.
