Richard M. Cowling

Richard Mark Cowling (born April 27, 1955 in Eshowe ) is a South African biologist and botanist . He is co-editor of the ESA journal Conservation Letters .

Cowling earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1975 and in botany in 1978 from the University of Cape Town . In 1983 he received his PhD there in Plant Ecology . After holding positions at Curtin University and the University of Cape Town, he has been Research Professor at the Botany Department of the University of the Nelson Mandela Metropolis in Port Elizabeth since 2000 . In 2008 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .

His main areas of work are the identification and protection of threatened ecosystems, with an emphasis on systems used by humans. His main focus shifted to the human-ecosystem interaction. However, he is also interested in environmental factors ( climate variance , geomorphological factors).
