Richard Neuz (born November 23, 1894 in Kälberbronn ; † July 9, 1976 in Stuttgart ) was a German painter and illustrator who belongs to the so-called lost generation .

biography

Richard Neuz was born on November 23, 1894 in Kälberbronn near Freudenstadt. After the shocking experiences he was exposed to as a front soldier in World War I, he began - against the declared will of his family - an apprenticeship at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart, where he studied with Ernst Schneidler .

At the end of the 1920s he became friends with Max Ackermann and Heinrich Eberhard , who introduced him to the circle around Adolf Hölzel , whose concept of "absolute painting" aimed at sensual and moral effects had a lasting influence on the young painter. In 1932 he participated in exhibitions for the first time, at the same time he worked as an advertising designer in the Tietz department store in Stuttgart. Like his friend Ackermann, Neuz was also a staunch advocate of left social models. In 1935, two exhibitions showing works by Neuz were closed by the National Socialists. From 1941 to 1944 he was a soldier in World War II; in a bomb attack on Stuttgart, his studio burns with all the pictures.

From 1947 Neuz was one of the first artists to exhibit again in the heavily destroyed Stuttgart, first in the Herrmann Gallery (together with Willi Baumeister, among others ) and later in the Maercklin Gallery, which brought together many of the former Hölzel students ( Max Ackermann , Ida Kerkovius ) . In the late 1940s, his works were already strongly committed to abstract formal language, although the objective starting point often remained recognizable. He earned his living as an advertising designer in the Stuttgart department store Union and as a freelance illustrator. From 1966 he worked closely with the screen printer (and later gallery owner) Roland Geiger and, at a very old age, created a graphic work of 80 sheets. Richard Neuz died in Stuttgart on July 9, 1976.
