Richard Ormond

Richard Louis Ormond , CBE , (born January 16, 1939 in Batheaston ) is a British historian , art historian and former museum director.

Life

Richard Ormond was born to Conrad Ormond and his wife Dorothea Charlotte, nee Gibbons. The mother came from the nobility and was the daughter of Sir Alexander Doran Gibbons, 7th Baronet of Stanwell Place. A paternal grandmother was Violet Sargent Ormond, the sister of the painter John Singer Sargent . After school education attended Ormond first the Brown University in Providence , Rhode Iceland before the Christ Church College of Oxford University studied history. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts .

Ormond began his professional career at the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery , where he curated an exhibition of 100 works by his great-uncle John Singer Sargent in 1964. In a further exhibition in 1965 he was dedicated to the work of the Pre-Raphaelites , who are particularly well represented in the Birmingham Museum. He then moved to the National Portrait Gallery , where he became a curator for 19th century art. In addition, he was deputy director of the museum from 1975 to 1983. In 1983 Ormond started working at the National Maritime Museum in London. There he was in charge of the in-house collection of paintings until 1985 and was then director of the museum from 1986 to 2000. This also included the Royal Greenwich Observatory . During his tenure, for example, the major renovation of the museum's Queen's House fell . He has also curated a number of high-profile exhibitions such as Armada (1988), Henry VIII (1991), Pirates (1994), Titanic (1995) and Story of Time (2000). Ormond was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Watts Gallery in Compton, Surrey for 30 years until he left this position in 2017.

In 1970 Ormond brought out a first biography on Sargent, which was to be followed by numerous other publications, including the painter's multi-volume catalog raisonné, which he wrote together with Elaine Kilmurray. In addition, he published, for example, on the English painter Frederic Leighton . Ormond was also repeatedly active as a guest curator. In 2015, for example, he conceived the exhibition Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends , which was on view at the National Portrait Gallery in London and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In 1999 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Greenwich in London for his services .
