Richard Adolf Luitpold Paulus (born June 11, 1883 in Munich , † February 1, 1929 in Leoni am Starnberger See ) was a German art historian and art dealer .

Life

Richard Paulus was the son of the art dealer Adolf Paulus (1851–1924); his godfather was Prince Regent Luitpold, a friend of his father . He attended the Munich weekday school and the Schnepfenthal Institute near Waltershausen , and after his father moved to Berlin, he attended the Dorotheenstädtische Realgymnasium there . Determined to take over his father's art salon, he left it in 1901 before he graduated and went to the Berlin commercial academy. After completing his military service in 1902/03, he worked for several years as a volunteer in the art trade. In 1907 he began studying art history at the University of Munich . After completing his school leaving examination in 1909, he continued to study in Munich, where he received his doctorate on July 14, 1911. His teachers were primarily Berthold Riehl and Karl Voll . He published mainly on the Bavarian art history of the baroque and wrote articles for the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present .

In 1911 he married Sophie Dorothea Countess von Bothmer (1884–1962), from this marriage the son Herbert (1913–1993) and the daughter Birgitta (* 1914) emerged.

In 1913 Paulus was a founding member of the Museum Association for the Würmseegau eV He opened as its first chairman on July 9, 1914 in the presence of Ludwig III. the museum for the Würmseegau in Starnberg , of which he was honorary director until his death.

From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. The politically liberal left Paul joined the DVP in December 1918 and was chairman of the first Starnberg workers' council from November 21, 1918 to February 25, 1919 . On February 20, 1919, he was also elected to the full board of the Reich Association of Intellectual Workers . In June 1919 he became captain of the Würmseegau's resident defense.

He worked as a sworn expert for art and opened the “Galerie Paulus” in the Palais Leuchtenberg in Munich at the end of 1922 . Here he carried out numerous exhibitions and auctions.

Richard Paulus died of hypothermia after breaking into the ice of Lake Starnberg. In 1929 his estate was auctioned off at two auctions in Munich.
