Richard Pococke (* 1704 in Southampton , England , † 1765 near Tullamore , Ireland ) was an English travel writer and Anglican bishop .

Richard Pococke went on an expedition to Egypt and followed the course of the Nile . He wrote travel reports about his experiences in the Orient; his report on the Valley of the Kings was best known . He also wrote accounts of his travels in Ireland and Scotland.

In 1742 he was elected a member of the Royal Society . From 1756 to 1765 he was Bishop of Ossory, Ireland, and in 1765 Bishop of Meath.
