Richard R. Schmidt

Richard R. Schmidt (born May 14, 1935 in Schwäbisch Hall ) is a German chemist. He is Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Konstanz .

Schmidt studied chemistry at the University of Stuttgart with a diploma in 1960 and a doctorate in 1962. He was a post-doctoral student at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla in 1965/66 , completed his habilitation in 1968/69 at the University of Stuttgart and became a professor there in 1970. From 1975 he was a professor in Konstanz. He turned down appointments to Heidelberg and Mainz. In 2003 he retired.

Among other things, he deals with the synthesis of carbohydrates , especially glycoconjugates from carbohydrates and proteins as they occur in cell membranes and fulfill important functions there, for example in cell recognition, methods of creating glycosidic bonds (trichloroacetimidate method), synthesis of glycosidases and inhibitors of glycosyltransferase and study of their enzymatic function and solid phase synthesis of oligosaccharides .

In 1995 he received the Emil Fischer Medal . In 2011 he received the Claude S. Hudson Award . In 2009 he was the first to receive the Emil Fischer Carbohydrate Award from the European Carbohydrate Organization.
