Richard Rothwell (born November 20, 1800 in Athlone , Ireland, † September 13, 1868 in Rome ) was an Irish painter who was best known for his portraits and genre paintings.

Life

Richard Rothwell was born in Athlone , Ireland, to James and Elizabeth Rothwell. He was the eldest of the couple's seven children. He received his training as a painter in Dublin from 1814 to 1820. At the age of 24, he became a member of the newly founded Royal Hibernian Academy , where he exhibited his pictures successfully on several occasions. Shortly after 1826 he moved to London, where he worked as an assistant to Thomas Lawrence , whose style influenced him. After Lawrence's death, he completed some of his paintings. After 1829 portraits were made of the MPs William Huskisson (1830) and William Carr Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford (1831) and William Farren (1829), all of which are in the National Portrait Gallery in London. He also portrayed Victoria, Duchess of Kent . From 1830 he also painted genre pictures that were influenced by Italian paintings.
