Richard Stöhr
Richard Franz Stöhr , actually Richard Franz Stern (born June 11, 1874 in Vienna , † December 11, 1967 in Montpelier , Vermont ) was an Austrian- American music theorist and composer .
Life
Stöhr studied with Robert Fuchs at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts Vienna . From 1900 he worked there as a teacher of music theory and counterpoint as well as the theory of musical forms (1904–1938), and in 1915 he became an assistant professor.
Among his students were Herbert von Karajan , Rudolf Serkin , Erich Leinsdorf , Samuel Barber , Erich Zeisl , Louis Horst, Marlene Dietrich , Alois Hába , Hellmut Federhofer , Franz Schütz , Leonard Bernstein and Eugene Bossart.
In 1938 he emigrated to the USA and taught at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia .
