Richard Steevens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Steevens (* 1653 ; † December 15, 1710 in Dublin ) was an English-Irish doctor and benefactor.

Richard Steevens and his twin sister Grizel were children of clergyman John Steevens and his wife Constance. John Stevens, who belonged to the Church of England and originally worked in Wiltshire , fled Oliver Cromwell's regime with his family to Ireland, where he settled in Athlone . There he served in St. Mary's Church. Richard Steevens received his basic education at the Athlone Latin School and entered Trinity College in Dublin on October 12, 1670 . In 1678 he graduated with a Master of Arts . Presumably he had devoted himself to theology by now, but when his father died in 1682 he decided to study medicine. This training ended in 1687. Richard Steevens became Regius Professor of Physic at Trinity College in 1710 .

Richard Steevens bequeathed his fortune to his twin sister, but linked this inheritance with the condition that a hospital should be built after Grizel's death. Grizel Steevens made her brother's wish come true while she was still alive, and in 1733 Dr. Steevens Hospital in Dublin. It existed under that name until 1987. Today the facility is called the Eastern Regional Health Authority's Shared Services Center .
