Richard Strelli (* May 12, 1875 in Trieste as Florian Strelli ; † September 27, 1940 in Graz ) was an Austrian Benedictine and from 1929 to 1940 abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Paul in Lavanttal .

Life

Florian Strelli joined St. Paul Abbey in 1896 and took the religious name Richard. In 1900 he was ordained a priest. He then studied ancient languages for teaching and then taught at the Stiftsgymnasium, which he directed from 1914 until he was elected abbot in 1929. In addition to his teaching activities, he was particularly committed to adult education. In 1933 he added a secondary school to the Stiftsgymnasium. The collegiate church was renovated from 1935 to 1936. His interest in the early history of the lower Lavant valley led to several excavations, which he personally directed, and to the opening of a museum for prehistoric and early historical finds, the holdings of which were partially dispersed after the abbey was abolished. From 1930 on, Strelli was also curator for lost property in the Wolfsberg district.

Since the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, the pen has been exposed to increasing pressure from the state authorities, against which Strelli defended himself without success. The collegiate high school was closed and the abolition of the monastery was ordered, but execution was suspended until after Strelli's death in 1940.

Strelli left numerous scientific articles in relevant journals.

Since 1901 he was a member of the Catholic student union KÖHV Carolina Graz .
