Richard R. Wagner (born April 2, 1957 in Montreal ) is a Canadian lawyer and a judge at the Supreme Court of Canada since 2013 .

Family and education

Wagner was born the son of Claude Wagner and his wife Gisèle Normandeau. His father was a member of the Québec Legislative Assembly , the Canadian Parliament and the Canadian Senate . His paternal grandfather, Benjamin Wagner, immigrated to Drummondville from Europe . Wagner received his schooling at the Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal, where he graduated in 1975. He then took up the study of political science at the University of Ottawa . There he was awarded a Bachelor of Science in 1978 and a Bachelor of Laws the following year .

Professional background

After completing his studies, Wagner was admitted to the bar in 1980. Until 2004 he mainly worked in the area of ​​professional liability law and advised lawyers and architects , among others . He also dealt with questions of commercial law and negotiated various class actions . He not only appeared before the courts of Québec, but also before the Supreme Court of Canada. During his time as a lawyer, Wagner was heavily involved in the Montreal Bar Association . On September 24, 2004, Wagner was appointed Justice of the Québec Supreme Court for the Montreal District. There he was a member of the Chamber for Civil Matters , the Criminal Chamber and decided on cases relating to commercial law . On February 3, 2011, he was appointed judge at the Québec Court of Appeals . On October 2, 2013, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Wagner's nomination as Supreme Court Justice of Canada. After Wagner was confirmed three days later, he succeeded Marie Deschamps , who withdrew from her position as judge in August 2012.
