Richard Zenke

Richard Zenke (born August 23, 1901 in Rügenwalde ; † August 16, 1980 in Hamm (Sieg) ) was a German art teacher, painter and illustrator.

Life

Zenke attended elementary and middle school in Rügenwalde and the secondary school in Kolberg . He then completed the teachers' seminar in Bütow , which he completed in 1921 with the teacher examination. After a few years of teaching, he studied at the art college in Berlin. In 1926 he passed the examination for drawing teachers for middle and high schools as well as teacher training institutions and then worked until 1935 as a drawing teacher at the middle school in Schneidemühl . In addition to his teaching profession, he soon established a reputation as a painter and book illustrator. His main subjects included fishing and rural life, as well as the landscapes of the sea and its hinterland.

In 1935 Zenke changed to a drawing teacher at the suburban high school in Königsberg i. Pr. , Most recently as a teacher. At the same time he became a specialist advisor for art and art education to the city and a district worker for East Prussia. He turned down an offer as a professor at the teacher training college in Elbing . During the Second World War he was used, among other things, as a drawing teacher for lay people in Norway. With the advance of the Red Army in East Prussia, his family fled to Rügenwalde, then to Mecklenburg at the beginning of March, where Zenke himself also came. He lived in Parchim until 1946 . After a stopover in Norderney , he came to the Palatinate Kirchheimbolanden in 1949 , where he became a teacher at the Nordpfalzgymnasium . In 1953 he got a job as an art teacher at the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. He moved into an old wooden barracks on the Rhine as home. In 1967 he retired from school. At the beginning of 1968 the family moved to Hamm an der Sieg.

Zenke was married to Martha Jantz († 1985), the daughter of a police master who also came from Rügenwalde. The marriage resulted in four children (Christiane, Dietrich, Wieland and Renate). His daughter Renate Zenke-Mortensen was also an artist.
