Richart E. Slusher
Richart Elliott Slusher (born May 20, 1938 in Higginsville , Missouri ) is an American physicist .
Slusher graduated from the University of Missouri- Rolla with a bachelor's degree in 1960 and received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965 . From 1965 he was at Bell Laboratories . From 1977 he was director of the Optical Physics Research Department. He stayed with Bell Labs until 2007. He then was a Principal Research Scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. He is the director of the Georgia Tech Quantum Institute there.
In 1985 he and his colleagues succeeded in demonstrating squeezed light experimentally .
In 1995 he received the Arthur L. Schawlow Prize for Laser Physics for fundamental contributions in a broad spectrum of optical physics , for example nonlinear optics in semiconductors which led to the spin flip laser, diagnostics of fusion plasmas with carbon dioxide lasers, microcavity lasers and the especially the experimental realization of squeezed light . In 1989 he received the Einstein Award for Laser Science and in 2006 the Max Born Award from the Optical Society of America. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America .
