Rick Cornell Hellmann (born January 26, 1988 in Berlin ) is a German badminton player from the Berlin Wheelchair Sports Club . He is paraplegic and starts in Parabadminton in the starting class WH2, both singles and doubles.

Life

Hellmann grew up as the son of a German mother and a Congolese father in Berlin. As a child he did competitive swimming until he suffered paraplegia due to illness at the age of ten . In handicapped sports, he initially practiced wheelchair fencing . He is currently working as a doctoral candidate at the Department of Experimental Neurology at Charité University Medicine Berlin.

In 2014 he was approached at an S-Bahn station in Berlin and invited to a trial training session in Parabadminton at the RSC Berlin. In the following years he developed into one of the best players in his class and won several German championship titles. Hellmann's game is particularly characterized by its outstanding speed. In 2017 Hellmann started singles at the Badminton World Championship for the disabled in Ulsan, South Korea, and reached the quarter-finals. At the European Badminton Championships for the disabled in Rodez , he won a bronze medal in singles and doubles with his partner Young-Chin Mi in 2018 . Hellmann is aiming to take part in the 2020 Summer Paralympics , which will feature badminton competitions for the first time.
